Pulling An All Nighter

Warning: Do not do this unless under extreme duress!!!

With that out of the way, here's a possible scenario: it's exam week, you have a huge final at 8am Monday morning, and you foolishly wasted the whole weekend with your friends. You now have 2 choices- either fail the test or stay up all night studying.

Ideally, you should start going to bed a bit later at night if you suspect you may be in for an all nighter, to get your body more used to being awake at abnormal hours. If not, you will most likely crash a bit earlier than you may have otherwise.

First of all, have a good supper and relax in the early evening. You will definitely not have another chance to relax tonight. Before actually getting to the studying part, you will need to make a few preparations. One of the most important things to do is to choose an envrionment conducive to studying. Your bedroom with its inviting bed and air of comfort is the worst possible place. Find a deserted classroom or a study lounge or anyplace with uncomfortable tables and chairs that's unlocked late at night. If it has a television or stereo provided, more the better, but if not you want to bring something with, as a bit of noise will help keep you from falling asleep.

You will also need some food. Something with a bit of substance is preferable, alternated with pure sugar to keep from crashing when you just can't keep your eyes open. Cheese and crackers is good, probably fruit and vegetables as well. Avoid a nice hot bowl of soup, as that induces lethargy. A big necessity is caffeine. Lots of it. Basically, you want it in massive enough quantities that it can't possibly wear off until after your exam.

A partner is a big help for staying up all night, but you have to make sure that he or she is someone that you can, and will, study with. If you absolutely must take a nap to survive the night, he or she can also be trusted to wake you up in half an hour, with a bucket of cold water if necessary.

Now it's time to start working. You probably already know how to cram knowledge into your skull, so go to it. Keep some music playing if you can handle noise while you work, take frequent breaks, and try to keep the temperature fairly cool.

An hour or two before your exam, try to finish up your work so that you can prepare for the test itself. Take a shower and put on clean clothes so you at least feel like it's a new day even if you haven't slept. Allow a further fifteen minutes to go outside and take a walk, or some other light exercise, again to trick your body into feeling refreshed. And don't forget to eat breakfast. If you can stomach a good meal, eat one, and if not at least get some more caffeine and sugar in you, making sure to postpone the eventual crash until after your exam. If at all possible, don't take a four hour nap starting at noon, but wait until that night to get a good night's sleep so as to avoid turning nocturnal (trust me, this is very possible).

And last of all, good luck.
