Harry Potter's First Case
Created | Updated May 1, 2002
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is J.K. Rowling's first Harry Potter Book, and the first book she ever published. She was single mother, struggling to pay the bills. She won an award from the Scottish Arts Council, which helped her to finish this hilarious story, and launched the series. Even Steven King liked this book.
The main characters are:
Harry Potter, the book's hero. He has a cool, lightning-shaped scar on his forehead;
Hermione Granger, the greatest witch of her age, and the main heroine of this book. She's a genious, but strict. In the beginning of the book, she doesn't like the other two, but they saved her from a mountain troll, and she became their friend;
Ronald Weasly, Harry's first friend in the Hogwarts, the school of witchcraft and wizardry.He has five brothers, and one sister, and his dad is in the Ministry of Magic. Ron is funny and a good friend.
The main villian is Lord Voldemort, who killed Harry's parents and scarred Harry with the Curse of Death, an evil spell stopped only by the love of his dead mother. Lord Voldemort suffered a backlash when the curse failed, turning him into an undead, snakelike monster. He hates Harry, and tries to kill him.
In this story, Harry was one year old, and orphaned when Hagrid, the gamekeeper of Hogwarts, took him to his Aunt and Uncle Dursley's house to be raised. This unpleasant, awful couple and their awful son, Dudley, Hate magic and loathe Harry and his parents. They act as though he was a disgusting slug, and treat him horribly, making him do most of the work and giving him very little food. They give him horrible presents like his uncle's stinky old socks.
When Harry is eleven years old, Hagrid comes and delivers his letter of acceptance. After a fight between Hagrid and the Dursleys,
Harry goes to Hogwarts.
After many adventures, such as being "sorted" by a magical, talking hat, playing Quidditch and learning magic, Harry's life is threatened by Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort tries to steal the Sorcerer's Stone, a magical stone that can make the Elixer of Life, which will bring the evil sorcerer back to life. Harry, his friends, and Albus, the headmaster, fight him off, just as he is about to kill Harry and take it. Albus saves Harry , and destroys the stone.
I loved this book! I loved the next three books in this series even more. It is clever, easy to read, and you want to keep reading it, even when it's over. I didn't like the Slytherins of Slythiren House, Harry's rivals at Hogwarts. I really didn't like Snape, the potion master. I couldn't stand the Dursleys! If I were you, I would read this book!
