I was bought Black House by King and Straub as an xmas present but I haven't got around to reading it yet..is it any good?
The last book I read was Coldheart Canyon by Clive Barker which was quite good .
I enjoy reading books by Stephen King,James Herbert,Clive Barker,Anne Rice,Laurell K.Hamilton (if u like buffy ull love her Anita blake Vampire hunter novels!),Dean Koontz,Richard Laymon etc,
though d have to say my favourite is probably Herbert. I loved his "Moon" .
Whats you're favourite Stephen King one? mine has GOT to be Gerald's Game, really scared the pants off me with the thing that comes and sits in the corner!..

Dave-M Posted Apr 4, 2002
I like Dean Koontz as well, and I read Geralds Game just before Xmas.
I haven't got far into Black House yet, so far it is pretty slow, but I'm sure it will improve.
It takes me ages to read a book, I have to really be in the mood for reading. I'll finish it eventually though!
I really liked Herbert's The Fog. I have read so many horror books I could never remember them all.

This surely must fall into the spooky category. I too am reading "Black House". I also haven`t gotten far into it
Sandra will know this already, but for the benefit of others my favourite authors are Stephen King, James Herbert, Dean Koontz, Shaun Hutson and Terry Brooks.
Favourite King Novels to date are "The Dark Half", "The Stand" and "Needful Things". Pity he`s going to retire after his next few projects are complete.

OOh thats a bit Twighlight Zone...lol
I really couldnt get into Needfull things..didnt like the film much either.

Detective Armani Posted Apr 6, 2002
Not seen the film. Don`t usually go out of my way to watch the film versions. The only King work i couldn`t really get into was "The Dark Tower" stuff.

Serephina Posted Apr 6, 2002
Ive not read the dark tower stuff.I hate the way that they never seem to make king books into proper films, its mostly just bad "for tv"stuff (with the exception of carrie, the shining the dark half etc).

Hi Sandra, and D. Armani
I've not read the Dark Tower stuff either, but I did like Needful Things.
I loved reading Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, And I thought the film did it justice too.
Like you Sandra, I used to be an avid reader, until I discovered, first the joy, and then the mental torture, that is LD, lol. That put the kybosh on my reading time.
You have started something here Sandra, I hope it blossums

I haven`t got round to reading "The Shawshank Redemption". How does it compare to the film? Any major differences?
Favourite Horror Authors.
Serephina Posted Apr 6, 2002
I havnt read the story or seen the film in that case.It was a short story wasnt it?Think ive got the book its in somewhere,or did have at least.
Another one of his i loved that was based on a short story was Silver Bullet, think the story was called Cycle Of The Werewolf.

Dave-M Posted Apr 6, 2002
Yes, the Shawshank Redemption was featured in a book titled Different Seasons, with 3 other stories, The Body, Apt Pupil, and The Breathng Method, and the film sticks religously to the story, for once.
As I said, I liked them both.

Hi fellow horror fans!
I too like Steven King (read most of them) Dean Koontz (again, read most) but my all time fave is Graham Masterton! No one can beat him for inventiveness and sheer gruesomeness!!

Detective Armani Posted Apr 6, 2002
Hello Mistdancer and welcome. I haven`t read Graham Masterton novels. What would be a good place to start.
Sandra...i am 100% female. Took the name from an episode of Due South. Mmmmm, mounties

"Ritual" is a good one, so is "Pariah". If you can be bothered, read the "Manitou" series. The first two (The Manitou and Revenge of the Manitou) are ok, but the third one (Burial) is a corker! One of my all time faves! I can't even tell you anything about the best bits, coz I'd get moderated
They certainly couldn't make any of his books into decent films! There's too much they'd have to cut out

You`ve certainly got my curiosity aroused. Another few books for me to keep my eye out for next time i`m in town.
Cheers

Hi, not really a massive horror reader, like Koontz and Clive Barker, although I think of Barker as more dark fantasy than horror. Read his 'The Thief of Always' and thought it was brilliant but it's hard to pigeon hole, kinda fairy tale come horror come fantasy.
So who would you suggest as good writers of psychological / suspense horror? The sort of things that make your mind work over time?
And what about Richard Laymon? I read his vampire one, can't remember its title but it was not very good. Is his other stuff better?
