Multi-User Dungeon, a text-based virtual reality game created by Dr Richard Bartle and Roy Trubshaw at Essex University, England in the 1970s as a project to create the most annoyingly addictive form of computer entertainment possible.

The format of the game has been copied frequently. There are now thousands of MUDs available on the internet and other networks, all of which are based on this original game.
