Scientest: Pavlov

0 Conversations

There was once this guy named Ivan Petrovich Pavlov. He lived from September 14, 1849 until February 27, 1936. This guy was was a Russian Physilogist and an Experimental Psychologist. He primarily worked with dogs. He pretty much just did what everybody already knew: That you can train a dog. But no, he had to make this huge shpiel about it and write it down in some books and stuff like that. Anyway, what he found out was that there are two kinds of reflexes(Well actually there are a bunch, but he only worked with 2): Conditioned Reflexes and Innate Reflexs. For example:
If you stick your hand in a fire, you immediatley pull your hand away after it has been burned because it hurts: that's an innate reflex. A conditioned reflex is when you don't stick your hand in the fire because you already know that it will hurt.
He's written a couple of books. Some are PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AND PSYCHIATRY, and LECTURES ON CONDITIONED REFLEXS: TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF OBJECTIVE STUDY OF THE HIGHER NERVOUS ACTIVITY BEHAVIOR OF ANIMALS.
The deal with the dogs is that he wanted to see if the dog will salivate and begin the digestive process even when there is no food. So, he rang a bell whenever he gave a dog some food. And after a while, he rang the bell and the dogs began to salivate, even when there was no food. He also found out that if you rang the bell enough times, without giving the dog food, he will learn that he won't be getting food when the bell rings.
