A Conversation for Spike Milligan - 1918-2002

Spike Milligan

So, we have finally lost our greatest living comedian, who has now become our greatest ever comedian.

Although ‘comedian’ is hardly the most appropriate word, as Spike’s talents had always seemed to me to lay more (if only just so) in the area of writing, both of radio and television scripts and of more serious - if that adjective can ever be applied to Spike - literature.

And I’m sure he would have wanted equally, or even preferred, to have been remembered as a musician and composer (and has his trumpet work, I believe first performed in Sydney Opera House, ever been published ?).

His demise I have dreaded for some time, ever since seeing his frail performance at our local Concert Hall.

If I had ever had the good fortune to meet him, I wonder whether, especially in regard to my over-respectful attitude, he might have seemed rather less of a hero, or even a god, as I would have liked.

At least I no longer need to worry, and one hopes his mind is at last at rest from his torments.
