Here is an Article of The Southernmost point in America. I found it to be a fascinating place.

I like the way you've been inventive with your links Shagbark, but the BBC won't look upon it so kindly You'll have to remove any that aren't in English, and possibly some that could be described as a commercial website, although those can be up for dabate with the Editors.

You are right about the links. Also the link to Fitzroy isn't an edited article so the editors would probably remove that one too.

This looks like a very good entry, but it is somewhat confusing with its talk of straits and passages. Is there any way you could phrase it so that we get a clearer picture without having to refer to a map?
There are quite a few typos and spelling mistakes. The most important is a missing W in the first Longitude reference.

I keep thinking I have this finished and then find something else to correct. Anyway take a look now.

It looks better now.
it's should be its.
You tell us twice that it is a land of high mountains.
You might as well remove the picture now, because the sub-editor will do it anyway when the entry is picked.

Here are a few more things which could be improved:
"There is a land on the southernmost extremity..."
I think that should probably be 'at the...', otherwise you'd be saying that TDF is on TDF - TDF being the southernmost extremity.
"This archipelago is the farthest point South..."
I believe that should be 'furthest'
You also tell us twice that it was the fires of the native inhabitants which gave TDF its name.
'Continent' doesn't need to capitalised.
'straights' - straits
"Sir Francis Drake in 1578 first set eyes on the Drake passage after going through The Strait. "
That's not grammatically accurate - the passage didn't have that name when he first saw it, that's why he named it
"In warmer climates colonization followed..."
I think you could do with starting a new paragraph there.
"During all seasons world travellers come to Ushuaia as Tourists."
That might read better as 'Tourists from all over the world visit Ushuaia at all times of the year.' Including the word 'seasons' in there and then talking about winter and summer could be confusing because the tourists might be coming from the northern hemisphere - are you talking about their summer and winter, or Tierra Del Fuego's? It seems pedantic, but it's little things like that which seperate a good entry from a *really* good entry
'Tourists' doesn't need to be capitalised.
You don't need to link to the Antarctica entry twice.
You don't have to remove the picture if you want to keep it in your entry, but it will be removed if the entry gets picked.

Most of what was said I agree with but I want to take issue with one point.
"There is a land on the southern Extremity" not at the southern...
I am talking plate techtonics here. The South American Plate has an extremity and this mountain chain probably has it's existance to thank for TDF being on the edge of this plate." The point "at" the southernmost extremity is Cape Horn not all of TDF. If you are going to be so pedantic as to limit the use of the term southern extremity to that Island then perhaps you sould also limit talking about the Summer Solstice to the exact second that light rays reach there farthest North or South rather thatn taklking about December 22 in TDF and June 21 in Greenwich England.

Sea Change Posted Jun 20, 2003
How big is the hole in the ozone layer nowadays?
Does one need SPF100, large, brimmed hats, and long sleeved shirts and trousers to safely visit Ushuaia?

There are scientist stationed at 65 degrees s. Lat. who might be able to tell you the size of the ozone hole but the last thing i read on it the hole was shrinking and I don't think it ever really posed much of a threat to Tierra Del Fuego. masybe someone should do a seperate article for h2g2 on the Ozone hole to give us a more definite answer

Actually, that rings a very faint bell way at the back of my mind. I vaguely recall seeing a report on tv - probably something like Newsnight or Channel 4 News - of farm animals in the far south of South America who are suffering from the effects of the ozone hole. I remember one very sad image of a with very nasty looking tumours around and covering its eyes.
How much further south is TDF than New Zealand? I have a friend there who told me that NZers are warned to increase the blocking factor of their sunscreen when they go to the South Island.

A little research into Ozone depletion shows that it reached TDF for about a week in 1994, that it was a slight problem during 23-26 June,2002 and 14-17 August 2002. Because the rays hit the earths atmosphere at a shallower angle you are much more likely to get Sunburn in the tropics than in TDF. More on the subject at

Do any of my peers think this subject needs to be mentioned in A694668?
