designed to protect feet from evil objects that are capable of cutting holes in delicate underfoots, shoes have a sturdy, slightly flexible sole. Most are comfortable and come in many forms, such as heels, pumps, dress, school, sneakers, loafers, platforms. Over the ages shoes have changed dramatically- in the late 20th century, shoes have been made from synthetics as well as leather. The most ridiculous and painful shoe invention for women was the platform stilletto- good for a makeshift weapon (the heel makes a long, pointed wound) but causes months (years) of pain, due to being bedridden for months afterwards trying to straighten out on'es knees.
