What does this key do?

A trivial question, but something that has been bugging me. I have the mac keyboard with the number pad to the right. Directly above the '7' on the number pad is a key marked with a rectangle with a cross through it. I've looked at a picture of the American version of the keyboard, and the same key is labelled 'clear'. On some non-mac keyboards it is the NumLock key. As far as I can tell it does nothing at all. Can anyone enlighten me?

Well, I suppose asking the question must focus the mind. It works as a 'clear' button in the Calculator program. But a button that only works in one program? Does it have any other uses?

It also works as a clear button in Excel (both in cells and with the embedded calculator) and a delete key in PowerPoint and Word. I have tried it in Text Edit and it does nothing to text.

It's interesting that it does stuff in Office programs, because it does nothing in the equivalent Apple programs (Numbers, Pages, Keynote).
