With my printer - Canon MP640 (wifi connection)
Why would this happen from my desktop ( OS X 10.6.8 ) ?
Printing works fine from my son's laptop
I've even installed the latest driver.
I'm stumped.
Help would be much appreciated, before I resort to paid help...

Can you try it with a USB cord?

g00d job I thought of that!
will do...
The problem is, that if that works (and presumably it will[?]), it'll still have to be made to work with the wifi. there's no room for it except where it is (the room is 3/4 full of my stuff and 1/2 full of Ms Stress's quilting gear).
Plus No1Son must have it available from his room as he's often on call.
Thanks kea

Apologies if you've thought of this already Rod, but click on System Preferences>Print & Fax, and check if your printer is in the list of recognsed printers. If it isn't, click the '+' button at the bottom left, and follow whatever instructions appear.
If your printer is on the list, is it marked as online, offline, or standby?

Rod, was it working before, or is it a new printer?
I'm not the one to talk to about wireless printing. My expensive bluetooth printer failed far too early in its lifetime.

hd, yes - actually, it's the only printer
kea - a couple of years old

I repeated my usual trick - switch everyting off. Leave it for an hour then switch back on...
That hadn't worked a couple of days ago so why not try again? It didn't work.
So, kea, for your suggestion...
. Move it to within range of a USB port, plug in - & - voila!
. put it back in its nest, on wifi, expecting the worst and, and - still OK
but then noticed I hadn't removed the USB from it --- surely not!
Very true - it still worked.
Presumably the hard-wire USB had overridden the problem - and what's more, overwritten whatever bit or byte had been the cause.
Thanks folks

I seem to remember that happening with mine too Rod, how curious.

Yeah, kea.
things electronic were pretty small compared with but still they were, , fathomable assuming you'd been 'brought-up' in that field and had some - er what? - some hardware + software knowledge / experience.
This, however, is outwith my understanding...
The USB connection overriding whatever the current settings were - OK, fair enough.
I could have programmed that (or at least, had a fair-go at it) in the 60s/70s - it's forseeable and therefore, after a warning query, standard procedure,
However, to then actually overwrite the (now) previous settings without warning is a step beyond which I could see (or even could have seen?) at the time.
The User was King (or in your case Queen? ha!).
Anyway, 'tis fixed. ;nuff said,
Except, will I remember next time?

Whatever.
Thanks, kea.
