putting pictures into different kinds of files

Whenever I load a picture (jpg) as an attachment into Mail, the picture appears turned on its side. I've just noticed that happens with other applications too. However when I open it in Preview it's either up the right way or when I've tried turning it in Preview, saving it, then putting it into Mail but it still turns up sideways.

Can I fix that?

I can only guess that Preview isn't actually rotating the picture, but rather just saving an instruction to display the picture rotated when opened in Preview. So when you view it in something else, it's still wrong. And I have no idea if my guess is correct, or why Apple would chose to do it that way.

But it would mean you need to use something else to do the rotation. Try iPhoto or Graphic Converter. Or did I misunderstand, and when you said "other applications" you meant you already rotated (not viewed) in other applications?

And it doesn't seem to happen on my Mac (running Leopard).

Interesting. Pictures that I drag from iPhoto to Mail, display the right way.

But yes I meant that if I rotate and save in Preview, it still puts the photos in sideways when I try and put them in another application. They actually load the right way in Preview, so I'm rotating them on to their side. But either way they still go sideways into the other app.
