Storing my old ibook

I turned on my ibook recently for the first time in months. The battery had discharged and so and to start it up from the mains. Is that normal?
And how should I look after my ibook given I'm not using it much at the moment? Is it ok that the battery runs down like that or should I make sure I start it up every so often to prevent that?
etc.
thanks,
kea.

Your best bet is to fully charge the battery, then unplug it from the iBook and store it in a seperate Jiffy Bag taped to the top. Plug it in about once a year to top up the charge if you want to keep it in good shape for "emergencies"...

Ok, if I were to use it every few months would it be ok to store it with the battery in?

I suspect that if it's going to be months between uses then unplugging the battery would still be an advantage. At worst, if the internal backup is a bit iffy, you'd need to set the clock every time you fired it up, but that's a small price to pay for not knackering your battery by deep-draining it.

I agree with Peet, remove the battery. The iBook will continue to drain the battery even when it is turned off, so the charge will not last. If you let the battery drain completely eventually it will refuse to take charge and you'll have to replace it.
This is a great resource http://www.batteryuniversity.com/ especially "Part 2".
