The History of the Distillery
Opened in 1896, the distillery was originally built to supply whisky for Dewars blends. Originally, it had its very own railway station, which was in use until the 1960s. The rails have now been lifted, and unfortunately, nothing remains of the station. However, the manager's office is situated on the site of the old track, and it is said that, from time to time, the sound of steam engines can still be heard when sitting at his desk.It was virtually completely rebuilt in the 1970s and expanded by the addition of two new stills, and is now a perfect example of a small, industrial type distillery.
The Whisky
As the vast majority of the production is used for blending, one can understand the reasoning behind the recipe used. The whisky is not too heavy, slightly oily with just a hint of peat and makes an excellent after-dinner drink. It could also be said that Aberfeldy is an excellent malt for those wanting to try something out of the ordinary without taking too many risks. It is an extremely well balanced malt.
