yep, it'll autoselect the existing directory for install, then check you want to install over the top of the existing install. It'll basically update it, thus keeping all your mail details, folders, history, contacts and even the look and feel of the browser if you're already on an 8.x version.
I've never had to do an uninstall since I went from 6 to 7.
And yes, it is nice not to have the adverts, but now I need to rejig my browser look and feel to take advantage of the extra space!

Do you delete the old application once you have installed the new one? Or just leave it there?
I found out I can't get the new version on my old machine anyway

Don't have to, opera replaces itself. You have to shut down of course, but it just replaces the existing install. Reuses the reg entries, the directory structure, the cookies, the history, everything. Its more an update than an install, but it doesn't call it that.
Can't get a later version? What you on? '95?

Mac OS9, it only takes Opera 6.
On my new mac I'm using OSX though, and will probably get the new Opera eventually. I'm enjoying the mac browser, Safari, as the moment.

oh. One of *them* are you? Oh well.
Not used safari myself, fact I haven't used a mac in about 10 yrs! Always used to be a laugh watching the first years at uni trying to work out how to get their disk out the drive on the Macs

Safari's nice. Tabbed browsing, google search in the menu bar, fast as. The key commands are taking a bit of getting used to - it takes two hands to shift between tabs, which is annoying as I'm often eating when reading online. I really like the system for adding bookmarks, where it helps you to choose folders etc as you go.

yeah, they're all going the same way, I reckon IE will have to go tabbed pages on the next release or be hopelessly outclassed.
The old Macs (dunno about current) from the '90s had no disk eject button on the floppy drive. Just the slot you put the disk in. You had to eject the disk using the icon on the desktop, by clicking it. Those who did not know this, and had only used PCs, would put the disk in then do their work, save it and log off. Then look very confused as to how to get the disk out! How they never sufferred serious damage I do not know!

Oh yeah I seem to remember that. I've always pretty much used macs, it's what I learnt on, so I find Windows clunky and ugly

O, I find windows clunky and boring. But at the moment I know that if I boot linux then I'll have to finish off setting up the home CCTV app on it, and I really can't be bother at the moment

There used to be an option somewhere to have the page reload every so often - very useful for your More Postings page - but I can't find it in the new version. Have they done away with it?

Ste Posted Oct 6, 2005
No. Right click on the webpage. It's "Reload every >"
Great for automatically updated the footy scores and league tables as they come in...

"very useful for your More Postings page"
So what's wrong with <./>MP147203?s_type=pop</.> now?
(Not that I don't agree that it's useful for a lot of *other* things. I miss it in my preferred browser! )

It updates every two minutes, but maybe that's not often enough for you?

Yeah, and it's formatted perfectly to fit in an Opera panel too!
Right click on your "My conversations" window > select "Bookmark page..." and select "Show in panel"

Oh, and you might want to rename the bookmark as something short and snappy (like "h2g2") so it fits neatly in the sidebar.
I think one of the best features of Opera is the way it zooms. It's especially good for flash-based sites like http://www.homestarrunner.com. I go there, hold Ctrl, scroll up til it fits the screen, sit back and click about. Opera's zoom is very clever at keeping the page in the same proportions on normal websites too.
Does anyone else always try to use mouse gestures when exploring windows? Can you get any programs that let you do that?

For use in a panel, set a target:
