INTRODUCTION STUFF

The h2g2 site Welcome Page (But you've probably already seen that.)

A personal welcome from Douglas Adams writer of the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy and creator and inspiration behind this site, now sadly missed by us all.

If you haven't already done it, why not take the h2g2 Tour which will show you many of the great things that this site has to offer.

HELP & HELPFUL PEOPLE STUFF

If you've got some particular question most of them get answered here at the h2g2 FAQ. There are also groups of volunteer researchers here that can help you with any questions you have.

  • The ACEs help new members of the community to settle in. They're friendly and approachable folk who like nothing better than a good chat.
  • The GURUs are the brainy folk around here who can answer all manner of technical questions about how the site works and how you can make your entries look really pretty and interesting.

The links to their Group's Homepages or to the individual ACEs and GURUs are in the box below.

BRIGHTENING THE PLACE UP A BIT STUFF

Smileys

Most folk brighten up their contributions to the guide with smileys like these

[smiley - biggrinsmiley - crosssmiley - donutsmiley - wowsmiley - teasmiley - bubblysmiley - fullmoon...etc, etc, ETC!]

You can see them all and how to use them here at the Smileys Page.

(One hint, you can point at any smiley and be told the code you need to type to make it happen. Click on the smiley, and you'll be taken straight to the smiley page.)

Skin

H2g2 comes in two "skins", or colours.

  • Alabaster which is now the default skin is white with green, yellow and orange bits on it and grey text.
  • Classic Goo is blue with white and yellow text and with, well, "Goo" bits on it.

Most researchers will tell you that Goo is the best skin type to use and it is easily the most popularsmiley - smiley If you are reading this in the "Alabaster" mode, why not click here to find out what Goo looks like? .....Much better isn't it?!!!

You can change from one skin to another by using the "preferences" button.

GuideML

The entries in the Guide are written using a type of HTML called GuideML. Don't be intimidated by it, its really easy to learn. There is a GuideML Clinic full of information on how to write in GuideML.

Another trick you can use if you see a page that has something you would like to try is to use the "test page" facilities.

To do this retype the URL of the h2g2 article in the your browser window from:
../h2g2/guide/Axxxxxx to ../h2g2/guide/testxxxxxx

Or for other Researcher's User pages:
../h2g2/guide/Uxxxxxx to ../h2g2/guide/testuserpagexxxxxx

This shows you the GuideML code that makes up the page. Try it now by looking at the code for this very page http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/test661169
