Although he was never directly connected to Doctor Who, Nigel Kneale's Quatermass was a direct predecessor of it. He was one of the architects of British telefantasy and his work on Quatermass and other spooky shows like The Stone Tape and The Woman in Black were hugely influential.

That's very sad. He was colossally important to SF in general and British SF in particular. When I was 12, I inherited the family's old B&W TV for my bedroom, and I remember vividly being glued to a repeat of his adaptation of 1984. Already a fairly ancient piece of TV at the time I watched it, it was still amazing. And the original TV production of Quatermass and the Pit was superb.
