A Conversation for The h2g2 Doctor Who Group

A Waking Nightmare

Post 1

Awix

A conversation heard earlier tonight in the Awix household:

'Are you going to be on the phone for long?'

'Why, what's the rush, I thought you were watching that thing on the regional news about Ken Dodd being the new Doctor Who.'

'I was, and now I want to ring the Samaritans.'

Please, please, let it be a joke or a con or another David Burton-style put-on job. Not Doddy... please, not Doddy...

I want to wake up now...

I would be forced to do nasty things with a tickling stick if it were true. However, I feel safe in the knowledge that I have seen plenty of these rumurs go past, and none of them (appart from Rowan Atkinson, and he was good) have turned out to be more than some guy bored at a desk picking names out of a hat.

Hmmm. This made it as far as a BBC news broadcast complete with interview with Doddy himself, and I'd've thought the BBC would have been able to verify it for accuracy... here's hoping it was a slow news day...

I don't see why they won't let Paul McGann continue the role. The was the best thing about the Doctor Who "movie" made in 1996. He's said he's happy to return to the role, and has played it in some "audio" stories.

yep-as I have said somewhere,I would be happy for paul to repeat his performance---just now I cant bring myself to think of him as the eighth doc smiley - doctor---because I hate to see the regenerations used up! (hopefully, the Gallifreians will allow the good smiley - doctor another dollop of regens for good behaviour! smiley - cool
I personally really liked the TVMovie...once I got over the shock, and gave it a chance!!! smiley - clown it took me to 1999!!!

Well -

I really liked Delta and the Bannermen, a breath of fresh air back in 1987.

And the worst thing anyone making DW could do would be to just make the show the fans wanted to see.

And yes, Paul McGann was great - but he'd carry with him audience memories of an overblown and badly-plotted near-fiasco, which aren't the associations a new production team will want attached to their new show.

as I always say, just leave Doctor Who were it is-in the past.I think theres enuff of it to last forever, and no matter what they did with new Who,it wouldnt be the way it was.Like I say about The Avengers,99% of the stories would never get off the ground in these days-a mobile phone would be enuff to foil those diabolical masterminds! smiley - thiefsmiley - scientist and new Who would be the same,or it would turn into the X files, and while Im sure X files is good, its just not the same.I see the McGann who in the same way I see the Cushing Dalek films-just for entertainment-but it aint Who smiley - rocket

oh,and I meant to say---I think Delta is O.K.-watched it on uk gold, then bought the vid---but I cant be bothered when Stars are used as an advert for shows, and Im sure someone will disagree with me here, but for example Nicholas Parsons in Fenric,he was a "star" but he isnt just an advert--he does a good job as the Vicar.(well I think so any way-Ive never had anyone agree though!!!)

"Paul McGann was great - but he'd carry with him audience memories of an overblown and badly-plotted near-fiasco"

I don't think that was cause any real baggage. It would also soon be forgotten. And, anyway, in the UK, the TV film was pretty successful.

9 million viewers, yes, but creatively nobody much likes it, not even the people who made it.

And the makers of a new series are going to be making A New Series. McGann was cast to fit in with Segal's vision for the series. The makers of a new series will want to cast someone who fits their vision for the series' future.

McGann was a great Doctor, so far as we can tell from the 60m he's actually played the part for on TV, but I think the main reason people want him retained is so the precious tin idol of continuity isn't cast down and trampled upon.
