St Serapion of Antioch

1 Conversation

One of our more obscure Church Fathers, Serapion lived around the latter part of the second century. He was a contemporary of St. Jerome and much admired for his teachings on Scripture. Speaking of those writing, there is not much that remains of them, but we know he spoke harshly to the Church in Rhossus regarding their use (or rather, misuse) of the Gospel of St. Peter in the liturgy.

Serapion was ordained a bishop in 190 AD and spent much of his ministry exercising his teaching authority (here, here!). He addressed the Montanism heresy in an apostolic letter and won praises among his fellow bishops for his strong theological positions. He was considered a leading theologian of the time.

He died in 211 AD and his feast day is celebrated Oct. 29 in the Church calendar.
