I'm guessing that Rincewind, from the Discworld books, is the ultimate master of this technique... Perhaps we should all take a minute to learn from him.

Good call, but Rincewind is just a very advanced student - he tend to be in the vicinity of "interesting" events right up until a minute or two before they happen. The *true* masters are guys you've never heard of, because by the time something interesting is happening, they're long gone.
