Astral warfare

The GOM Field: Primarily a defensive mechanism that will give off the aura of a grumpy, old man. The idea behind this is that grumpy, old men are, for the most part, grumpy because life just fail to excite them anymore. They have seen too much and lived too long. There isn’t much that could be thrown at them that would seem as a surprise. So they can easily, but reluctantly avoid any type of standard issue missile, bullet, or insult. Grumpy, old men also possess an uncanny ability to haphazardly survive practically anything (you can’t be old and grumpy if you don’t live long enough to be old and grumpy). The universe will exercise extreme bias and stubbornness in making sure that this happens. Not much new can destroy these existentially protected things. And even if something were to pose an actual threat, chances are they would rather leave than bother to put up with the constant complaining and reminiscing about the good old days while trying to wipe them out of an existence that just won’t let them go.
And this style of defensive warfare worked well until a group of frustrated arms dealers (who fundamentally thought warfare should be offensive and profitable) came up with DRY tm. Wear. DRY tm. Wear was an astral paint that was painted on a bullet, bomb, missile, or anything else that makes loud booming noises and kills a lot of people. Once applied it would look like a pack of drunken, rowdy youths. Once launched at a GOM ship, the DRY missile would always miss. It would also scare the bejessus out of them sending them fleeing for the safety of a Veteran’s Legion spaceport. Or the GOM ships would turn off their GOM fields and resort to the more classical approach. Beat the hell out of each other with whatever they each have.
This caused the weapons prices in increase, not to mention the price of ship repair and replacement. Business was good again. The profiteers celebration was marred though by the constant complaining from drunken, rowdy protesters, disturbed by the fact that Galactic peace is just not economically feasible.
