The Riddles of J.R.R. Tolkien

1 Conversation

J.R.R. Tolkien, best known for his wonderful fantasy books in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, is also known for his riddles. The best known collection is in his book "The Hobbit". Here we have some examples:

#1
Alive without breath,
As cold as death,
Never thirsty, ever drinking
Dressed in mail, but never clinking.

#2
What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet, never grows?

#3
This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, and flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel,
Grinds hard stones to meal,
Slays kings ruins town,
Beats the high mountain down.

#4
It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Stumped? Well, you're not alone. If you what to know the answers, scroll down a bit, but if you don't what to give up, then for you, this article has ended.

#1 A fish
#2 A mountain
#3 Time
#4 Darkness

Those were your next guesses, right?
