Oops, sorry Rod, we've had to remove that link to the poster art, as it was a commercial site.

Which reminds us, do you think it's worth noting in the Entry that these details do not refer to wartime trenches, such as those dug in First World War Flanders? Or is it just us war-mongering types that immediately have that association?

The thought never crossed my mind, but I can see how the connection could be made.

Do we know how the war trenches were made? They may have used roughly the same techniques (says the lass who know absolutely nothing about it).

I had never considered it either. I tend to live in the here and now. But, if there is a doubt, maybe the RodtheBrit would consider adding [Garden] to the title as:

How to Dig a Garden Trench?

Points taken folks - I'll do something! - done:
Title is now-
"How to Dig a Garden Trench"

The intro was-
"A definition of ditch is: a trench made in the earth by digging.
It'd be a bit worrying to find that a trench is a ditch made in the earth by digging... anyway, why worry about a ditch? We'll go directly to a trench."
Is now-
" ... We'll go directly to a trench, of the common or garden variety."

Digging wartime trenches? It must have been something similar to this - a big yellow excavator would have been too obvious a target, no?

- just in case you missed it, my moded post (42+1) above referred to the WWI classic cartoon "If you knows a better 'ole, go to it"

Oh, and I've taken a photo of the tools mentioned - how do I present it for consideration as the illustration?

1. A garden trench. What exactly is a garden trench?
2. A drainage trench: What exactly is a drainage trench?
3. A footing trench: What exactly is a footing trench?
4. A electrical trench: What exactly is an electrical trench?
5. A irrigation trench: What exactly is an irrigation trench?
6. A absorption trench: What exactly is a absorption trench?

I'll not go through those individually, Keith, but just say that perhaps

a channel or
a trough or
a nexcavation or
a furrow or
a rut or
a conduit or
a cut or
a drain or
a duct or
a waterway or
a watercourse or
a nentrenchment or
a moat...or
...a fosse

would fit, perhaps with some minor alteration smiley - tongueout

A bit like Taff's smiley - zen digging - become one with your spade.

Should we have a 'talk like a spade' day?

smiley - erm I do seem to have spent a lot of time communing with nature in the garden recently. Got quite close to a few spades and holes in the ground. None you would recognise as trenches though. Even the sweetpeas went around a wigwam this year.
