Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
Scope: give suggestion on which database choose.
First you may read an introduction on database from our res.:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A569883
Commercial Databases, you have to buy:
- Oracle: slow, expensive, rock solid, most scalable, portable on different platform
- SQL Server (Microsoft): fast, ultra-proprietary (as Microsoft way), medium expensive
- Sybase: n/a
- Interbase (Borland): cheaper, fast
OpenSource Databases, you download them for free:
(by the way, what the heck is opensource ?, goto http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A640702)
- Mysql: fast, very popular in the Internet community, not professional at present (lack transactions)
- Postgresql: slower solid, well documented
- Interbase (again): open source version
