Pub Golf
Created | Updated Feb 8, 2002
Pub Golf is the ultimate of hardcore drinking games, forming a part of the student binge drinking rituals for many years. This game is a St Cuthbert's1 institution and is played every Fresher's Week as a lightweight 9 hole version2. The scoring system is just like that of golf and the aim is similar3.
How to become unconscious in three easy steps
Playing Pub Golf is a good way to get to know the pubs, bars and clubs in your area. The only problem comes in the morning when you try to remember them. Don't let this discourage you from this fantastic social activity4. Playing Pub Golf is easy;
- Get a group of friends and decide on either nine or eighteen6 pubs to be the 'holes', what drink will be nominated at that hole and the par for it.
- Go around each hole in order, and buy the nominated drink. Attempt to down the drink and note how many tries it takes. Write down the score difference against the par.
- Move on to the next hole and repeat. The one with the lowest score at the end is the winner
Par for the course
Of course, not every drink should have the same par. Many are easy to down7 whilst others can take a few tries. To help you out, here are some tips as to how to calculate the par for a drink.
- If its bubbly the par should be high - no one likes to be too bloated so lagers and ciders have higher pars than you'd think
- The stronger it is the higher the par - this is simply due to stomach irritation8 but is secondary to the bubblyness of the drink.
- Drunk people drink more - the pars should get higher as the course goes on, but equally --
- Drunk people vomit more - so don't have them get too high.
- Drinking thickly fills - Stouts, whilst having low pars, shouldn't be too low.
Typical awards for winning and losing
The usual reward for winning a game of Pub Golf (having the lowest score) is to drink a dirty yard of beer. The typical prize for coming last is the same. However, feel free to invent your own awards for this game.
After game activities
Pub Golf as a game may have ended, but you still have friends to entertain and there are many ways to round off the evening. One of the most popular is the Toilet Game, where you and your friends take it in turns to lean over the bowl of a toilet to empty your stomach. Whilst this is popular, there is a strong contender with the Stomach Pump Race, which has you running against the clock to get to hospital before alcohol poisoning sets in. Both make a perfect end to a good game and should be considered a part of the experience.
