A necessary addition.
Is it a good idea to give the h2g2 Feedback's email address if a non-working address is specified in the Preferences? It seems quite possible to me that a person willing to sign up an account solely to spam a site wouldn't hesitate to flood an inbox with spam emails.

If the researcher is newly set up to do this, will they have stuff on their personal space to enable this you to post? Or is this a hithertoo hidden power the italics have anyway?

The italics have always had the power in these cases to create a blank personal space for the person so that a message can be left. IIRC, it's mentioned in the <./>HouseRules</.>.

I'm shocked at the neccesity, but if the spammers want war, they can have it!!

SEF Posted Jun 3, 2003
No! We don't want a war. Not if by that you mean spamming them in return. What we want is a peace-keeping action, which this proposal seems to be, whereby someone puts up the force-shield so the spammer's missiles simply impact on the surface. The remaining problem is how to alert the people holding the force-shield button quickly and be sure they will respond quickly.

We can't force their Personal Space open, but we can create a blank entry in their 'name', and we'll post there. I haven't seen this create a Posting in their message centre, but only post to the new entry. If Researchers make it difficult or impossible for us to contact them, there's nothing we can do about it. We'll contact them where possible.
If it happens out of office hours and none of the Editors are online, then use the complaints button and ask that the spamming/flooding escalation procedure is activated. The Moderators can alert their supervisors, who will alert us to the problem.

Depends how many people actually "like" the stuff.

Great news!!!!!.. Glad that something has been done to stop as quickly as humanly possible any future intensive spamming...
Certainly better and more efficient than spamming them back [especially if they only open an account for their unsocial activities () as they would not _really_ care about seeing their space being spammed anyway...]
Talk soon...
