A Conversation for Talking Point: Scary Stories for Halloween

true stories for Hallowe'en

There's a certain camp site belonging to S.W.Lancs Scout Association which I first visited as an 11-y-o.

In 196??? I was at a weekend camp in company with around 20 - 25 others of similar age. We saw a figure in full armour ride a horse up the main drive, through a verandah window and up a broad, sweeping flight of stairs (not a sound was heard, however).
Closer inspection revealed unbroken windows ......... the hall was locked, and used solely for admin purposes during the day.

Next day we were told the story (which we weren't aware of, as this was our first visit to that particular camp site).

Apparently the original 'Lord of the Manor' returned from the Crusades to find his wife "in flagrante delicto" (she thought he'd been killed, as he'd been away for so many years - or at least that's how the story goes!)

She was so afraid she jumped out of the bedroom window and broke her neck when she landed.

Her faithful pet dog, Dash, jumped after her and suffered the same fate. The interesting thing is, there's a monument outside the Hall inscribed "Alas, poor faithful Dash" - but there's no memorial of any sort for the wife!
