WTC Construction Flawed?

Along with many, I can only add my shock to the terrible acts of terror which have resulted in potentially thousands of deaths in the USA.
Despite this it appears that many of these deaths would have been adverted, had the WTC structures been designed more realistically. The risk of aircraft collision with skyscrapers is an old story. The Empire State building itself being a victim. How did a single, albeit massive, impact cause the complete collapse of each of these structures.
Surely the designers must have considered this type of event, whether through accident, mistake, or evil intent.
Due the culture of the American legal system, I can see considerable action in the coming years agains the constructors/designers for what may have been a forseeable kind of disaster.
