In need

1 Conversation

It strikes me as a human being, and to some extent backs up my contempt to mankind, when i find some philosophers philosophizing about whether to help someone in need or not, and whether we should have a law or a rule which we can use and go back to in deciding whether we help an old helpless woman/man crossing the street! who we could classify as "helpless" and in need of help?
Is it that vital and worth talking about in pages and pages? Is it really important to set a maxim of the will? my contempt is justified as long as the whats-in-it-for-me worm dwells in the back of our heads when in a situation that requires the easiest, most brief involvment of our humane "good" nature.
Of course there is the unescapable fact that, if you live enough to grow old and your best friend becomes a branch of a tree that is as old as you are, and like to have a walk across the street, because its been a while since you walked, YOU will be that helpless person.
I believe in the sour power of comparison and contrast. Have your belief system on the run and be kind to humanity for God's sake, and if you find yourself in a situation where an old woman and a cat need your help, please help the "helpless" old woman!
