Prologue



The English East India Company defeated Peshwa Baji Rao II, the ruler of the Maratha Kingdom, took over his kingdom and sent him along with his family to Bithur, with an annual pension of Rs. Eight Lakhs. Moropanth, one of his courtiers, used to reside in the palace along with his daughter Manikarnika.
