JOLT Cola- Elixir of Life
Created | Updated Jan 23, 2006
Firstly, JOLT came into existence 20 years ago in 8 oz. cans, and in only one flavor. Just a standard cola, rather unremarkable. The only thing that made it special was that it's manufacturer, Wet Planet Beverages, was at the time completely unconcerned with the "health" aspect of their drink. This was at the time when "Diet", "Sugar Free", and other weak attmpts at making soda a health food were going around. W.P.B. said they knew that soda was not meant to be healthy, and that people drank cola for one reason: caffine. So they packed JOLT with as much caffine as they could.Obviously, peole soon realized that this was the most powerful drink on the markert, and it soon became well known for that fact. It did well in Mini-Marts the world over, becoming the hacker and programmer's "drink of choice." Their adverising soon came to reflect that. Sadly, JOLT was discontinuend in the mid-90's due to an inability to keep up with Coca-Cola and Pepsi, as well as some unfortunate legal issues. Due to it's high caffine content, JOLT was banned in some areas, and stores in some other areas refused to carry it. Some people speculate that the US goverment pressed for tighter regulation of JOLT as part of their anti-hacker campaign. This theory is little more than rumor, and is widly ignored. Wet Planet had made enough cash off of JOLT to begin to branch into other drinks, such as DNA and Napa Valley Soda. JOLT lay forgotten for a time.
The computer culture, however, did not take kindly to the loss of their favorite beverage. There was much noise on the internet for a long time, and after quite a few years Wet Planet began to sit up and take notice. JOLT was brought back to life and sold over the 'net. The re-relase of JOLT in 2004 was hearaled by a new container, the "battery bottle."
These aluminum cylinders held 23.5 oz. of JOLT, and around 290 mg. of caffeine. Also, more flavors came into being. In addition to the "classic" cola flavor (similar to Pepsi, but not quite), Cherry, Fruit Punch, Ultra (sugar free, no flavor added), and Blue (cotton candy/blue ICEE sort of taste) are now available. These bottles are more sturdy than the average can, as they need to survive cross-country shipping via mail, which is how most people get their's.
Anyone who is interested in computers or gaming should look into getting some JOLT, as it remains a staple of computer culture to this day. It is held in vast demand for it's ability to keep you awake overnight, giving you the energy you need to play with your computer for another eight hours. If you can buy it locally, you are lucky. Most everyone will need to search for an internet site that sells it. http://www.joltcola.com is obviously the best way to go here, but one can probably find a better price with some research. http://www.JINX.com sells it, as does any other computer site worth their salt. One can also find other way to get JOLT, other than the drink. With the new bottle came new products. JOLT gum, mints, and
"pocket packs" (same idea as Listerine pocket packs) are now avalible and sold most anywhere the drink is. They don't have quite the same kick as the cola, but they have more than most other drinks. The gum is about on par with coffee, caffine-wise
WARNING: Given it's demand, it is fairly pricey. Also, since anyone who orders over the net will probably have to buy in bulk, they should be prepared for some hefty shipping charges.
OTHER WARNING: Caffine can be dangerous and addictive. Don't be stupid. Use with caution.
