The Sydney Opera House

Early draft - to be greatly expanded
The glorious soaring sails of the roof of the Sydney Opera House make it one of the world's most well-known buildings. It stands on Bennelong Point, overlooking Sydney Harbour. It was designed by the Danish architect Jorn (note this is an o with a stroke through it) Utzon for a 1955 competition. Because of the technical difficulty of constructing the roof to his design, the building took many years to complete. The first opera was actually performed there in 1973. The cramped production conditions apparently do not live up to the beautiful exterior and stunning location, but the Opera House has become a much loved symbol of modern Australia.
