English Football Champions (The Premiership Years)
Created | Updated Oct 10, 2009
This is based on the boxing principle that whenever the champions "play", their title is up for grabs. If they lose the game the title passes to the team that beats them, and that team is the champion until they suffer a loss.
I thought it might be amusing to apply this principle to the Premier League. And then decided this would be a good first submission to HooToo, to see what happens next.
I cannot believe I am the first person to run with this version of the idea, and maybe there are folk out there who could either confirm my results or point out my errors.
Since posting this I have found someone even crazier who has applied the principle from the very first English League season when referees and the Queen wore black. Interestingly, despite the different routes the championship has taken between theirs and mine, the current champion is still Manchester United. Does Sir Alex have influence in places we cannot even guess?
In 1991/2 the last Football League champions were Leeds United.
In 1992/3 the first premiership season, Leeds lost their third game to Middlesborough 1-4. Middlesborough lost their next game to Southampton 1-2, and so on, and on, and on.
Interestingly, the "Champions" at the end of the first season were Manchester United, who had beaten Norwich at the beginning of April and remained unbeaten over 6 games to the end of the season. This is the only occasion when the official and unofficial champions were the same club.
In 1999/2000 Sheffield Wednesday ended the season as unofficial champions but were also relegated, resulting in all unofficial championship title games taking place in the First Division for the next two seasons until 2001/02 when Birmingham became unofficial champions and won promotion.
At the start of the 2009/10 season the unofficial champions were Liverpool who were beaten 2-1 by Tottenham Hotspur who held on to the title until their loss to Manchester United, who currently hold the title following their draw with Sunderland.
The next title contest will be on October 17th when Manchester United host Bolton Wanderers.
Naturally there is a lot of additional data underpinning the above but I won't bore you with that at this stage of the drafting.
