i was having my breakfast tea, I noticed some distance away a young man in his early twenties -apparently a private driver washing, rubbing his bigger than scorpio car, music blasting shattering the quiet of this remote rural area on the outskirts of a village in Indian Punjab.
Many drivers of trucks decorate their possessions, specially trucks and tractors . Trucks on highways can be seen dangling parandas, bangles and perfumed with incence sticks. Lovingly polished the back of the heavy vehicles read sher o shayari , mostly the themes of which express their fear of wicked eye , and the reads are gestures of keeping them safe on the road. Long distance and private vehicles are like family members, cars become personified, treated as a living being, so I watched intently at the young man who parked his master"s car under a shady tree, giving it a regular bath and an after bath massage religiously
Warna is a custom, when people doing warna hold some money in their hand and circle it around the object or person"s head ,throwing he money later to the needy. It is said the evil eye is thus satiated and becomes harmless, ineffective. New vehicles as are treated with much love and care, warna is done on them too. Jooti-a punjabi shoe handmade is stuck on the trucks numberplates or a black mask is hung on houses to ward off evil.
Warna is done for charity, khairat, sadqa.
Usually food was given away, later token money took over.
Giving away with warna goes away the impending expected negative influences that could have befallen affecting the object .
