The Early Estaurine Defence of Hobart, Australia
Created | Updated Nov 7, 2005
Many Tourists who visit Hobart, will visit Battery Point ( at which there is no Battery anymore ) and Visit Salamanca, and think they have witnessed a large part of Hobarts history. They are wrong.
In the Early 1800's, as Australia was just starting to grow, The Government in England decided it was necessary for Port Phillip Bay ( Sydney ) and Hobart to be defended.
The Solution?
They Built a Defence System remarkable in it's coverage of the Derwent River. The Locations of the Batterys were as follows: The Domain, Kangaroo Bluff, Battery Point, Alexandra Battery and Margate. These Batterys were installed to stop any boat, by covering the entire river on Both the East, and West sides of the River. ( NOTE: This is a big river.)
The Batterys
The Domain
The Domain does not have any actual reamains, but is a great place to see the Cenotaph and kick around the Football.
Battery Point
Princess Park is now the location of an information board, and nothing else. It has a great park though
Kangaroo Bluff
The only one on the Eastern shore of the river. This one is the most interesting and has many tunnels and history information boards up.
Alexandra Battery
This battery is the best view after the mountain, it has great remains in perfect condition ( apart from the occasional graffiti). It has a fantastic grass covered park that is kept green all year round and is perfect for watching boats race on the river
Margate?
Where was this one? i found nothing hinting at its location...only rumours from various people of its location down near margate...weird.
The end of the Batterys
The batterys were last used to defend against the Russians after the Crimean War.
Since then, some have been left to crumble, some were removed and others, like Kangaroo Bluff and Alexandra Battery, have survived and continue to be restored.
