Pennsylvania Dutch

2 Conversations

In contrast to popular belief, the Pennsylvania Dutch (USA, as if there were any other Pennsylvanias) are not Dutch at all, but German. Yes, they are German immigrants from the early periods of mass USA immigration. They are known as Dutch because the way Germans say 'Germany' or 'German' sounds an awful lot like Dutchland and Dutch. Ever since that misconception, they have been known as Dutch.

A few things you also should know: (contributed by Jimi X)

The dialect - 'Throw the horse over the fence some hay.'
The cuisine - pig's stomach and funnel cakes
The Amish - driving horse-drawn carts down busy roadways
The Mennonites - driving cars with black bumpers for the same reasons the Amish drive horse-drawn carts
