Rodmarton Manor
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
Fine example of Arts & Crafts movement manor house built between 1909 and 1912 by Cotswold craftsman led by Ernest Barnsely for the Biddulph family who still own it and much of the village of Rodmarton. Deceptive building from close up - appears more a product of the 18th Century than the 20th. Interior full of Arts & Crafts movement designs, from furniture to china.
Recommended for anyone interested in fine local craftsmanship. Particularly worth looking out for are the Hare and Owl motives on the marvellous rainfall guttering and piping around the house, the furniture of Peter Waals, and the simple ambience of the gardens. Take a moment to look at the tapestry in the 1st floor corridor and reflect on the astonishing social changes that the past century has wrought.
