A Conversation for Talking Point: Worst Meal of All Time

Mexican restaurant in Spain

Well, it was not exactly Spain. It was Mallorca, where I had my worst meal ever. And, as everybody who lived there knows, Mallorca is not Spain. No som espanyols. Which is fine for me, I'm neither. Anyhow, the restaurant was Mexican. Or claimed to be so. The ambience was in fact resembling the utility rooms of a public swimming pool. Cosily tiled in light blue. Unfortunately the smell wasn't far off either. The waiters were charming and that I do not mean ironically, they were! My friend and I agreed that in spite of the unlucky choice of decoration the friendly waiters deserve a chance. We ordered the food. Well, what can I say. Mexico is a poor country. A lot of Mexicans sure are happy not to go hungry to bed. So we feasted on a tortilla-based meal of which I can't remember the details, because the incident happened about 15 years ago. But I remember well that somehow the food seemed to extend in our mouths. Very, very useful in a poor country where lots of people need to go hungry to bed. Not quite as useful if you want to convince foreigners of your culinary skills. But we did have - secretly, because we are well-educated people, a real good laugh about this incredibly uninteresting meal. And we tipped the waiters generously. It wasn't their fault and they were really charming.
Needless to say this restaurant had a very short life span.
