Saggar Makers Bottom Knocker

Yep, its true!!! There is such a thing. Actually there is such a person, or is it a skill? Aha! Its a person with a skill!! Anyone who comes from Stoke - The Potteries - knows that the "Saggar Makers Bottom Knocker" was one of the most important people in a "Potbank". He was the chap ("Bottom Knockers" were always men ... it was very heavy work) who made the base of a "saggar" from a lump of soft "fireclay" using a metal ring as a former and a wooden mallet called a "Mow". Clear enough? Apologies to hitchikers who may not come from "neckend" ... I realise that this article may be a little too technical for non-potters. Tough!!
