Blast Off Chapter Two

James felt a certain silence come over him. He was about one metre away from stepping on the surafce of the moon.
"OK. I'm opening the hatch door now."
"Hold on a sec James haven't got my helmet on yet!"

"Just think in a few minutes they'll be standing on the surface of the moon. Mankind once more on the moon." the controller said with a sense of pride and achievement.
"Suppose so." muttered the PM.

James pulled the lever and the hatch swung open and the surafce of the moon became real, not a photograph or a TV ad for watches.
James lifted his foot and stepped onto the ladder, excitement filling him like his mothers toad in the hole.
Tom smiled as James turned round and took his next step.
"I'm now coming down the ladder."
James took another step. He was now on the last step. One more step he'd be touching the surafce of the moon.
"Go on James. You can do it."
James looked down at the moon and up at the ship. He made his decision. James jumped.
His feet hit the moon.

Every single human being in the control room was silent. No one dared to breath, waiting for the words which James would say on this historic moment.

"Well, I'm on the moon. Boy!" James whistled.
"Well there's no need to brag about it!" said the Prime Minister as the words came through the COM.
The Prime Minister tutted and went back to his, happy german biscuits.

"OK James. I'm coming down now."
"Great Tom, fantastic!" exclaimed James with a hint of sarcasm.
Tom slid down the ladder and ran over to James.
"This is incredible. I feel like I'm underwater! How did we ever make it?"
"We built ships and flew here."
"No!" said Tom, "How did mankind ever achieve this?"
"Don't ask me."
They were interrupted by a loud thud. James spun round to see the hatch door sealed.
"Hey Tom, the doors closed. Did you close it?"
"No." answered Tom, "Is there wind on the moon?"
"No they proved that wrong after the flag incident."
James expression changed. He bounded over to the door and up the ladder.
"Open the hatch door LAH."
Inside the ship the blue light flickered on.
"I'm sorry James, I'm afraid I can't do that."
"Stop fooling around LAH. Open the door."
LAH was silent.
"LAH?"
James and Tom were trapped on the surafce of the moon, locked out of their ship with their air running out.
"I wish I was just sitting at home with some tea." mumbled James.
