The Haitch Hypothesis

"In Hertford, Hereford, and [most importantly] Hampshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen." But perhaps they happen often enough to drop the odd gate in the middle of a field.

If something as exciting as a hurricane had just happened in your embryonic town, you wouldn't be that interested in the poxy gate. It's be called "place where Hurricane happened", or "Milton Keynes" in Celtic.

That presupposes that the hurricane took place during a time of human occupation; and not, as I had in mind, in the long-before. In any case, I was actually referring to the phrase made famous in My Fair Lay.

I'm not always totally in favour of name changes (see my user entry on Opal Fruits) but in the case of "My Fair La(d)y" I think we should make an exception.

That's naughty Cavebloke; but in character with you nom-de-mouse (?). It would probably appeal to the exec.s at Fox, too. How about a sequel to Little Women?

Well, when the "big wind" happened around ten years ago it more or less destroyed Yateley. The school's roof was neatly removed and deposited on someone's house a mile away and their massive satellite dish has not been seen to this day. (We got a week off school though). A neighbour of mine wasn't too happy though: while most of us had to wander down the road to find our fence panels, his oak tree had been ripped up and demolished the side of his houde. One of the main branches had completely speared his bathroom. Ouch.

That was terrible! My wife and I visited Kew Gardens the previous Spring; and the thought of all those magnificent trees lost was heartbreaking. Still worse if the magnificent tree is one you have grown up with.

As a hurricane is a tropical cyclone does this mean Britain is sailing into the sunset?

It may have been trying to run bfeore the storm; but large parts of it were dismasted.

Okay - if one wants to be technical then no, we didn't have a hurricane. However, we did have hurricane force winds at that point in the UK, but as they were inland it is classified as a bad storm. One that can blow roofs off and uproot fuly grown oak trees ...

Awfully depressing so to speak. A bit like a cyclone, sometimes known as a depression....Sorry I jest. it must have been terrible
