Being a foreign exchange student

1 Conversation

The success of whatever you want to do or learn while spending a year as a student somewhere in a foreign country is entirely dependent upon your host family. They are the center of your life for a certain time, and if you want to go anywhere you will be dependent on their will to bring you there. (at least for the first time) They can make an otherwise rather dull place exciting, but if you have bad luck you can at least be bored to death, if not worse. If they're very nice, pretty liberal with letting you go out, and take you to places the probability that, at the end of your year you're reluctant to go home is pretty high. On the other hand if you have constant trouble with your family you will be homesick most of the time. Therefore you have to be on good footage with them at all times.
