Is it because they felt just so-o-o-o bad for knocking Wales out that they refused their place?

1950 was a great world cup for trivia ... remember USA 1-0 England (USA captain was actually Scottish!!)

I think I know this one. The Home International Championship - the old tournament that used to take place regularly between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - was used as a World Cup qualifying group by FIFA, who wanted the winners and runners-up to go to the finals.
However, the proud Scots said they'd only accept a World Cup place if they won the group. They came second and kept their word, refusing to accept their World Cup place. But no doubt they raised a few s in celebration as England lost to the USA...
