The management committee.
A Volunatry Organisation has a management committee (can be called Trustees, directors etc) These people are elected to govern the organisation.
The different layers
I work for a Registered Charity that is also a company limited by guaruntee. Our management committee is actually a board of directors. They have a lot of legislation to adhere to including comapny and charity law.
Not all voluntary orgaisations are companies or registered charitiesand not all have staff.
Day to day contact
Most people think that it's all charity chops and helping older people. I am a Development Officer so my role is to develop the people who work in the sector and develop the sector. The sector is a very large employer and has a large imact on both local and national statergy.
A career in the sector
There are so many different possibilities that they are impossible to list here. We are not do gooders, not all religious and we do get paid and have company pensions!
I work in the sector because my job is interesting and challenging. The sector is a good place to work up the lader at a quick place I am 25 and a senior officer. My Managing director is under 50 and the duputy director is 32. We work at our own pace and take responsibility for our own work load but it is important to be professional in attitude. That doesn't mean that you have to wear a suit!
