The township of Cooktown was first settled by Captain James Cook when he beached the Endeavour after running aground on the great barrier reef on June the 10th 1770.He set up a temperary settlement until he was able to have the HMS Barque Endeavour repaired.
In celebration of this event Cooktown has a rediscovery festival each year on the Queens birthday weekend. There are many activities on the weekend a few are : A Re-enactment of the landing, A parade of locals, A raffle to fire the old cannon, a Re-enactment ball.
This celebration is attended by many tourists from around the world who come to see the true first settlement of australia and the surrounding areas, some of which include: The Palmer River goldfields, the Trevathan Falls,.
