The PhD/Doctorate

1 Conversation

Some people go to graduate school for 5+ years in the pursuit of a PhD. What is this PhD? What do you have to do to get it? And what is it good for?

A PhD is a doctorate in philosophy. Not that you need to study and philosophy to attain it. Though you will probably need to learn to talk authoritatively about things you know little about to get a PhD. It is considered the "third" degree, post bachelors and masters, the ultimate degree attainable by just going to school. Unlike the previous degrees, attending courses and taking tests is not the essence of the PhD degree. Rather, the focus is on doing research and churning out publications culminating in a thesis. Thus, what it ostensibly grooms you for is being a researcher or academic.
