Advice on Student Boredom
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
As a college lecturer I have an overwhelming instinct to nurture and guide young people through challenging and difficult situations.
One such situation common to most university students is the boredom during the semester in which they are supposed to write their dissertation.
This entry seeks to promote a discursive forum on things for students to do whilst waiting for the deadline panic to set in. Here are my first two ideas:
1 Biscuit Chicken
Biscuit Chicken is a game for two or more people to play and requires the following equipment:
1xpacket of biscuits
tea,coffee maknig facilities.
Each contestant in the game takes one biscuit and one recently made mug of tea/coffee. When everyone is ready one of the contestants begins the game by saying "dunk." On this command each contestant will immeadiately dunk their biscuit into their tea/coffee. The winner is the last contestant to remove their biscuit from their mug without it breaking.
Experienced players have identified a number of factors for consideration when entering into a round of the game.
Perhaps the most important thing to examine first is the biscuit itself. It is widely known that certain types of biscuit are especially suited to the task of dunking. "Rich Teas" and "Ginger" biscuits, for example, seem to hold together quite well whereas "Digestive" biscuits are rather unstable. It is also prudent to be aware of the age of the biscuit. Check the best before date and notice whether the pack is unopened before the game (it may also be useful to enquire about the storage conditions).
Other factors include the strength of the tea or coffee and the temperature (watch out for "blowers" players who attempt to unfairly cool down their drink).
2 "Wacky Races" Sweepstake
When I was in my dissertation semester an episode of the "Wacky Races" was aired every week day at around breakfast time (3.00pm). This could be recreated if the show is now off air by puchasing the Hannah and Barabera compilation video.
Each contestant would simply pick which vehicle they believed would cross the finish line in first place.
NB Dick Dastardly and Mutley NEVER win the race even though they spend much of it in first place thanks to their evil sceming. Other contenders to choose from include:
The Compact Pussycat
The Arkansas Chugabug
The Army Surplus Special
The Turbo Terrific
The Boulder Mobile
The Buzz Wagon
The Bullet Proof Bomb
The Crimson Haybailer
The Creepy Coupe
and The Convert-a-Car
There are only two pass times on this list. Please add your own additions or imporvements.
