This document was generated using a copy of Word 97 on a secondary hard drive of my work machine running XP Pro. On opening, it grumbled about corrupted files in the Registry, because this machine normally uses Word 2003, but it worked fine for this purpose – all you need is winword.exe.

And it wouldn’t be right without a few pointers...

To make sure tags nest properly:

1. First select the text tight to the characters
2. Apply the first format
3. Now select it including the spaces at each end
4. Apply the second format

Of course, you may have trouble if you want to apply another one – but GuideML doesn’t seem to like underlines!

And it helps to turn off automatic word selection – use the Shift and arrow keys only, rather than the mouse.

And be aware that if you want to apply formatting at the beginning or end of a line, you will get overlapping tags that you must sort out.
