Can anyone assist me in clarifying what the difference between a Sea and Ocean is.

In particular why are the Red Sea and the Mediteranean Sea not Oceans ?

I am sure size has a lot to do with it and the fact that both of these Seas are constrained by some sort of Strait. The effect is to restrain the flow of current to other areas. Also it is interesting to note that the Red Sea has no major rivers flowing into it and is dependent on the neighbouring Ocean for fresh inflow.
