Ask any American tourist what Oxford and Cambridge are famous for, and they'll tell you that they're Universities. And then promptly proceed to ask you how to get to them whilst standing in front one of the colleges on the high street.

Ask any American tourist what Bristol is famous for, and they'll either not know of Bristol, or they'll mention the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the big building at the top of Park Street. And that big building is the Wills Memorial Building, the faculty of law, part of the University of Bristol.

Bristol is, without doubt, the finest academic institution the UK (and, quite possibly, the Earth) has to offer. They don't force you to wear a stupid hat to graduation, for a start (indeed, it is forbidden to under tradition). And the quality of teaching is up there on the scale of the Very Good Teaching Company Ltd.

What's more, the research at Bristol has been astounding recently. Did you know, for example, that using a mobile phone makes you more clever? It only makes you look stupid ...
