XML stands for Extensible Markup Language and is such a simple idea that it's really hard to go on about it at any length. The guiding idea is to leave the meaning in the data rather than trying to express it solely through formatting like HTML does. The meaning is left in the data by leaving markers enclosed in angle-brackets littered around.
